cimarron national grassland

It is a lonely place with huge views across the great plains. The Cimarron River runs through the middle.

One of the best solo camping trips I've ever had. I found Cimarron by looking for a green spot on the map I'd never been to, within a days driving time and I found it...in the South-West corner of Kansas; a curious little NPS category called "National Grassland".Wide-open prairie spaces, dotted with old windmills, tall grass and riparian oases, Cimarron is one of the least populated, breathtaking places I've ever explored. I found the mixture of history, unspoiled grassland and manicured campsites to be a perfect solo trip for cleaning out and recharging the soul.The campsites were empty except for me, which I thought was great, but even so, like all National Park system areas, they are very clean, very modern and kept up whether they have heavy use or not. God bless the NPS! I've never gone wrong taking a chance on an NPS park. Be sure to check out Point of Rocks, the Cimarron river, and there are several interesting hikes that go by very old limestone markers used by wagon trains. Perfect if you are the type who prefers unstructured exploring, as this isn't the sort of park with any organized activities or a communal pavilion or parking.

We drove through part of the grassland. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The flowers were blooming. We really enjoyed stopping at the windmill and watching how it pumped water out for the cattle. We saw several prairie dogs along the road (so drive slowly). Stop at the visitor center and pick up an auto tour brochure. The only complaint I have is the auto tour brochure had numbers for everything, but some of the stops didn't have numbers as we drove along and it was a bit confusing on where to turn to continue the loop.

The grasslands are different from Michigan! This is the true wide open spaces. The Santa Fe trail ran along here. Imagine the early pioneers who braved the trip west - days and days of travel along bumpy, dusty trails with nothing to see but grass and sky. It is beautiful to those who love big skies and open land.

I was traveling through "No Mans Land" recently, and discovered this off the beaten path national attraction. I traveled from Texas through the pan handle of Oklahoma and through the South western corner of Kansas into Colorado. I just couldn't wait to get to my hotel to write a review on the beauty of the area. Just north of Elkhart Kansas, you can find an area on the Cimarron river bed called point of rocks. This is an excellent area to hike and observe the natural minerals of South west Kansas.

The entire area is Beautiful, Peaceful and Inspiring. Definately worth the visit. The wildlife is impressive and the night sky magical. Do not miss the Sunrise nor the Sunsets.

Must be a true naturalist to appreciate this place. Out of the way but worth the stop. Grasslands are under appreciated but this place is great.

Fewer places can you find nature not molested by mankind. Large open sky, rolling hills and plains. Birds, antelope, snakes, insects and native grassland. The kids might wonder what you are up to but take a little time to just take it in and think of the Natives that originally existed here.
