One of the most beautiful coastal roads I've ever driven and I've done Great Ocean Road in Australia twice. American people don't need to travel whole way to the other side of the world to find spectacular ocean road, they just need to drive Big Sur and they've seen all.
A bridge without particular genius, over bixby creek. Anyway, interesting but without great flame or inspiration.Does not seem to justify the huge amount of people that gathers to make a picture (only when having already appeared in lots of films and television series). In "Big Sur" is perhaps one of the few times that there is no reason to stop. Continue straight ahead!
Didn't see a sign. Saw cars pulled over, which is not at all uncommon during this drive. We didn't realize what it was until we had driven over it.
Interesting bridge. Nice places to pull over, all though it may be very crowded. How could you not stop for the classic Big Sur bridge photo?
If you watch TV, even a little, you have encountered this bridge in one or another car commercials. If you are lucky enough to be on Route One, forget about the Amalfi Drive in Italy. This ride is better ... way better. It's not too narrow -- even though you'll think so -- but the absence of guardrails can be delightfully unnerving! But, The Bridge!! There's nothing to visit or to buy, and very few comfortable places to park; but you'll want to stop and gawk!! Just being there is somehow magical.
If you are driving down highway 1 then you should make a quick stop to snap a couple of photos there. There isnt much there and parking could be full depending on when you go. It really should be anything longer than 20-30min to take in the view and take a couple of photos, unless you want to climb down to the beach.
You don't need to stop for a long time, but you should stop for a good look and a photo of this iconic site along Big Sur. Parking is often very tight. If you can't find a spot in the parking lot on the ocean side just north of the bridge, take the dirt road on the other side and park your car 25 to 50 feet in. It's plenty wide enough that you won't impede the minimal traffic that passes along it, and you may find the *other* classic view: across the bridge toward the ocean. I framed my shot with western lilacs which were in bloom when we visited.
Don't just drive over it, find a place to stop and admire this historic bridge. There are turn outs on both sides of the bridge, and people park all over the place to get a glimpse and a photo, so watch out whether you're walking or driving. This is the Cali Coast, slow down, take it all in.
An iconic photo opportunity North of Big Sur on Highway 1 that you should add to your travel log. Bixby Bridge (aka; Bixby Bridge, or Bixby Canyon Bridge) spans the Bixby Creek between steep costal cliffs. This is one of the most photographed sites on the West Coast of California.Just 13 miles south of Carmel. the bridge construction was finished in 1932, it spans 714 feet over the Bixby Canyon, and it's one of the tallest single span bridges in the world at 280 feet off the ground. There are multiple photographic angles to plan your photograph of the Bixby Bridge. From the south a turnout allows a South to North perspective. The North turnout has a better angle for capturing the bridge. The best approach, however, is to make the bridge the focal point against the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. This dramatic perspective can be accomplished by driving (or walking) up the Old Coastal Road (North side of the bridge) and shooting West using the Pacific Ocean as a background. Obviously, late afternoon shots can be more challenging, but the striking contrast of the bridge against the water can make the effort worth while.
driving from san diego to san fran, we came through Big Sur. This bridge it really quite amazing, i did a bit of a mission on the edge of the cliff trying to get a great picture, but it was worth it.
They should put something up so people aren't hanging off cliffs to get a picture of this basic bridge, BTW the best picture we took came from the northeast side of the bridge and you don't need to hang of the edge to get it. I would skip it
We were lucky enough to find parking. Very cool stop. Just a place to strength your legs and enjoy the beauty.
We have driven this bridge and Hwy 1 several times ..We love architectural construction on the massive scale . (eg Hoover Dam ) But it must be " Impressive not gaudy ."It was another reason to drive in a genteel fashion on Hwy 1 .Observe , observe ,observe . Try to remember it all and let it soak for future memories .
While this bridge is just a part of the California coastal highway, it is a really wonderful structure which curves around the exit of the Bixby Creek into the Pacific Ocean. There is no public place toview the majestic curve of the bridge against the landscape but I found an "open house" for sale to the north of the bridge and I took my tripod and very large case of cameras through the house andout to the rear deck and rickity old wooden stairs down to the ocean. I set up there and shot back toward the entire span of the bridge, the creek and the hills on both sides of the gorge. A great looking photo that would be difficult to get back to today.
As the sign shows this bridge was constructed way back in 1932 and they are a great place to stop chill and get the cameras out. They look impressive and add to the 'event' that is Highway 1 and why people like us from the UK and all over the world love this part of the West Coast. I heard UK TV and radio presenter Chris Evans describe this road as one of the best drives and one for everyone's bucket list (for those who have one)We did it in a ragtop Mustang (twice) and will do it again it is a stunning road and the Bixby Bridge just adds to the occasion.
