My brother got married at the historic mine down the road and had his guest stay at the Holbrooke Hotel. The hotel is quaint and lovely. The bar is so fun, especially at night. They had an awesome cover band and everyone was dancing and having a great time. I did not eat at the restaurant, so I cant comment on that. The first night I stayed in the hotel and the second night I stayed in the house in the back. Both rooms were nice and clean. The hotel is true to its period and I felt like I went back into time. My family and I also experienced things that made us feel like the people that stayed at the hotel back in its hay days were still there. My parents room:They had a balcony and the door was locked before we left for dinner. When we returned, the door was opened. We checked and wiggled the door before we left and that door was locked. My room in the back house:My partner was smoking a cigarette out front of the house before we went to bed and I told her to put the cigarette out in the street. As she was walking back from the street we heard a little kids voice right next to us in a bush say, "why did you do that?" The voice was clear as day. We looked in the bush, around the parking lot, around the house and even made sure if other guest had their windows open. There was nothing! We got the craziest chills. We later found out that people have reported children in and around the hotel. My brothers sweet:My brother's groomsman brought a Ouija board and my brother said to get ride of it. That night they heard people and children in their room. The next day when they each took a shower they heard banging and people next to the shower! My uncle's room:He is very religious and does not believe in ghost. My aunt woke up to him yelling at a ball of light to go away. He was pretty shaken up.Very creepy experiences but I would definitely go back. That hotel was so fun.The only thing I will complain about was the continental breakfast. The breakfast was a joke. It did not look fresh and it was just sloppy looking. They had a waffle machine that had batter all over it, the ice that was supposed to keep things cold was melted. On top of that they did not even have syrup for their waffles. All in all, it was a great experience and I would recommend the Holbrooke Hotel.Oh I forgot to mention. I was there last year in June and it was a record breaking heat wave. The air worked amazingly!
A quick walk through into the past. The stone and brick walls and the old working elevator were nice to see. It is a working hotel but I didn't stay here. They have a lively bar and restaurant as well.
This a very clean, wonderful historically themed hotel. The rooms are big, clean and room service is awesome ! The Restaurant food is to die for and every thing is right on main St. ... shopping, wine tasting, and dining.
We had lunch on the patio, food was just okay nothing outstanding, patio needs to be cleaned and updated, looks a little shabby. Waiter was terrible, he never returned to keep our water glasses filled and had to find the waiter to pay our bill, the waiter is also the bar tender. I left a penny tip, hope they get the hint. Wont be back..
no need to go out of your way. It's right on main street. Had a drink in the back patio and it was very pleasant and the service very good.
My mate and I are 29 and we came one night after 10pm on a Friday night. We were the youngest ones there but we had a blast! It was live fun music, everyone was dancing, reasonably priced drinks, and partly open to the nice outside. I give it 4 stars because one of the bartenders didn't quite know what she was doing but the other one Daniel? was great! This was the place to boogie on a Friday as you can hear way down the street! I'd go again!
Stayed in Lotta Crabtree room. Room appeared clean until I looked closer. Obviously whomever stayed in the room previously was a slob because their snot was everywhere. Boogers on the wall next to the toilet. Snot on the wall behind shower curtain and behind the headboard of the bed. Their cleaning staff needs to clean better. Other than that the stay was enjoyable. Staff is very friendly and restaurant food is very good.
The Holbrooke has gone through several management changes over the last ten years and we haven't eaten in the restaurant for years. However we frequently have lunch in the historic bar. They serve very tasty steak sandwiches, onion rings and home made chips. We have found other menu items to be very good as well. The atmosphere is funky cool, and relaxed. Weather permitting, there is a nice outside patio for dining behind the hotel. Parking can be at a premium in Grass Valley, so the lot behind the hotel is a good place to park while you eat, and then window shop or wine taste in the old downtown. Makes for a great day trip from Sacramento, Roseville, or Auburn.
I recently attended a catered luncheon here in one of their private dining rooms and it was so charming = loved the old world atmosphere, and the food was very good.
Prime Rib was so tough that I took home a doggy bag for the dog and gave him the whole thing (minus the 3 small bites I ate).
I have vowed to never set foot in the Holbrooke Hotel while it is under the current ownership. I used to enjoy the bar, restaurant and hotel facilities-- we even rented the entire hotel for a Girls Night Out Party awhile back-- but the current owner has done his best to chase away long time customers, including women's clubs and others who used to hold monthly meetings there. The food is mediocre and overpriced, the hotel, kitchen and even lobby are filthy, and the owner is rude and disrespectful.
This historical hotel and restaraunt are wonderful. For living in a small town it offers an excellant mother's day brunch. Been going there for over 4 years and last year they had an upgrade and is still great!
The historic Holbooke Hotel is an excellent place to dine. On one occasion we hosted a party of 12. The food was very good and the prices reasonable. We return with friends and recommend it to others.
We had an event (rehearsal dinner) at the Hotel and were not actually guests there. The event was very successful and the service, food, staff, setting etc, were all superb. Details in my review for the hotel under "Restaurants" with TripAdvisor. Lovely old historic landmark that Grass Valley can be proud of. Outstanding bar attached, with really good food.
We enjoyed the live music as well as the fairly priced beverages. We also had dinner at the hotel on one night and it was very good as well. We stayed at a local B&Bs and were not hotel guests.
