The drive west of Amity to go to the Monastery is beautiful. And this time of year the Monastery is a wonder with daffodils in full bloom. It is so peaceful and tranquil a setting. We walked around and just took in how lovely it is out there. We also got some of the fudge made by the monks. It is really excellent, so creamy and delicious.
When we decided to buy a farm in Oregon's wine country last year, we were delighted to find that we have neighbors who make the best fudge I've tasted. The Monastery is not a destination attraction - it is a place of prayer and home to the men who live and work here. However, one of their works is a delicious assortment of fudge and truffles which they share with a very appreciative world. Plan to spend 30 minutes tasting the different varieties - my favorite is the chocolate cherry fudge that is available only during the holidays. There is a small stock of Catholic merchandise, including rosaries, literature, and illuminated manuscripts. While their confections are available in a number of stores (and online), if you are in the area, it's worth the short drive to buy from the source.
