So I was passing by the rest stop sign and pulled in to this little gem.Lots of history and displays, lots of local history. I noticed a man that was talking about his descendants and he was looking for information to fill his family tree. This great place, has all kinds of amazing displays, of how life was. Even stories about the Clyde Barrow gang, and their killing of a local policeman, and one officer who survived, and the removed bullets on display. This rakes about 30 minutes, and is certainly worth the price of admission, which by the way is 0.00Clean nice restrooms as well
Both sides of my family are from the Atoka and Coal county areas of southwestern Oklahoma. My families have had stories, and yarns too, all of my life and while visiting the museum in Atoka, I was able to put together parts of my rich and colorful history! Stories of Bonnie and Clyde and of Native Americans that are included in my genealogy came alive as I viewed the important historical artifacts and read the documents. The short walk through times of past deepened my gratitude and respect for those who have worked so hard to preserve our culture and honor our descendants. The gift shop is filled with a wonderful library of books and memoirs of people and cultures that could have been forgotten but will live on for our young people to know.
Lots of interesting history that gets passed up easily. There is a super cool confederate graveyard behind the museum! Also, a small dinosaur skeleton on display that is really neat!Highly recommend stopping here...
I pass through here often. And was glad I stopped here today. Good local history, with nice exhibits of county history and local legends. Was especially glad to see the exhibit of Lane Frost - who I knew growing up, and surprised to see that red and black hat!
