Located in the old hospital, there is a little bit of everything from the history of the Alva area. Better make sure you spend plenty of time going through this gem of local history! There is so much to see and experience! I never get tired of visiting because I'm always noticing things I hadn't seen before. It is truly a unique museum with exhibits you can get right up close to that the whole family can enjoy.
Seeking information about my ancestors who lived in the area circa 1900, I discovered this treasure on the west side of town. The museum is located in the old Alva Hospital, whose rooms are now filled with numerous artifacts from many decades of Alva's history: clothing, collectibles, art, equipment, instruments, war memorabilia--you name it. Exhibits included several dioramas, such as an old-fashioned post office, dry goods store, telephone switchboard, '40s living room, dentist's office, and surgical theater (even an old iron lung). The photographs of early Alva were priceless--and I even found one of my grandfather in the window of Dr. A.W. Clark's dental office, where he worked as an apprentice in 1910! You can buy a CD of the exhibit's photograph collection in the gift shop, along with postcards of local landmarks and murals, oral histories of the pioneers, and books documenting the Cherokee Strip. All this for only $3! Highly recommended!
Housed in a old hospital this museum has many artifacts through the early era. Donations at the door and small gift shop run by volunteers.
The museum is at the site of a World War II German POW Camp. It contains many artifacts from the prison camp with many pictures and stories. There is also many items relating to the early days of the city of Alva and it's connection with the settlement of the Cherokee Strip. There are many old farm implements on the grounds. It's a great place for a family visit.
