Compared to even other minor league ballparks, this one's a little rustic, but you can't help feeling warm and fuzzy when viewing a ballgame here. The turn of the century feel (and that's the 20th Century...not the 21st!) is as authentic as it can possibly be. So, grab some peanuts and Cracker Jacks and head to Centennial Field!
We have to get UVM Baseball back in Vermont. It is a travesty that the U of VT has no program. When there it was one of the most successful programs at the school. We were able to keep local talent in VT, the games were very well attended, and The Cats made post season play nearly every year, a great way to promote the school and it's athletics. Short sighted budget cutting and no long term vision of what sports to keep (go see a field hockey game with the other two people there) has eliminated a great spring past time at the field. BRING IT BACK
This baseball field has been in use for more than 100 years. The park offers old world charm from the very roots of baseball. A visit to this park is an adventure regardless of what event is happening there.
I love going to Vermont Lake Monsters/Expos baseball games during the Summer at Centennial Field! It's kind of like a little Fenway Park. The team is actually pretty good now and they have a lot of close games! The Lake Monsters are an affiliate of the Oakland A's and are a Single-A team. The season runs from late June to early September. It is really cheap to get in to a game. I think it's only $7 for bleacher seats or $8 for reserved seating. They have new seats called the "Curtis Lumber" seating which is right behind home plate and it's like sitting on the field. They are the best seats in the house and only cost $14. You can order food and have it delivered to your seat for no extra charge, and you get a lot of space. They have all of the typical baseball food and the prices are moderate for a baseball park. Every game day they have specials/giveaways, but make sure to definitely go on 25 cent hot dog night. They hold them 3 times during the seasona and they sell hot dogs ALL night for 25 cents with no limit. It's awesome! They also have activities for kids and other fun events during the game! They have parking on site ($3-$5), but it gets filled up pretty fast, so they have free overflow parking across the park on the Trinity Campus of UVM. That gets filled up fast too, so they have a third free overflow parking area at Patrick Gym at UVM with free shuttle buses to the park. It's like a three-four minute ride, or a nice five minute walk.Make sure to catch a game when the Lake Monsters are home a Centennial Field!
I am not a huge baseball fan but this is definitely a fun place to go. We always sit in the general seating up the third base line. There are a lot of foul balls hit to this area, maybe you will be lucky and catch one! The games are certainly not going to be the best games you have ever seen but you will still have a great time. If you have kids I think they will love this place. Champ is entertaining even to the adults. It is great for a big work party, a bunch of friends, or even just a simple date night. Arrive early for the best parking. The general seating has had some great updates, it used to be just sitting directly on the concrete which was painful. Now there are seats that provide some level of comfort.
We took our two sons, ages 10 and 4, to a Sunday Lake Monsters game. It was a lot of fun, with the game and all the activities and contests between the innings. The best part was that it was "Have a Catch Sunday", so we were able to play catch on the field after the game, under the lights. A lot of fun for all of us, and we got two free baseballs with the Lake Monsters logo on them!
We decided to see a Sunday Afternoon game while visiting Burlington. We were almost discouraged by the lack of parking, but being that Burlington is a walking town, we found parking a few blocks away and walked. We were able to get good seats for $8 each on the first case side. I would suggest though that while our seats were good, this is an older stadium and some seats are obstructed by poles. The seats are the old style green wooden seats, the area covered by a wooden roof. This is one of the oldest stadiums in use, and it is not a large stadium, seating about 2500. The field is average minor league, with the outfield decorated in local ads. Promotions seem to be frequent here, and there was some type of contest or event after every inning. Ushers and personnel were knowledgeable and helpful. They also had a silent auction for MLB and NFL memorabilia going as well as a 50/50 raffle for a charity. The game itself was exciting, with the home team coming from behind to win late in the game. Food was standard stadium fare, we especially liked the plastic Lake Monsters mini helmet filled with Dipping Dots for $4 and the hot dogs were larger than average. There are many choices as well. The stadium is small enough to allow for good viewing of the game, and in spite of adequate parking, getting in and out was easy. I would suggest parking somewhere on the University of Vermont Campus and walking.
Glad to know their will be baseball here for at least another 20 years, as the Minor League VT Lake Monsters owners are now leasing this field from the University of Vermont for only $1 per year. That also means major upgrades to this historic stadium. New seats no more concrete. Scoreboard, field improvements. Ground level field boxes behind the plate. These are 19-23 year old kids playing with the dream to one day make it to the big leagues. Such a fun and affordable night out. Easy to obtain autographs. Ken Griffey Jr played here in the late 80s, so you never know. Good food ( Three 25 cent hot dog nights per year) and of course the best mascot in the business: CHAMP. If you have never been, or if you have not been in a long time, it is totally worth coming back and checking out this little gem in Burlington/Winooski VT. $3 parking on site, or free 5 minute bus shuttle from Gutterson fieldhouse.
We have gone to baseball games at Centennial Field for years. The atmosphere is great! Many updates have been made in recent years. The new general admission seats are much more comfortable to sit on than the old concrete steps. Different promotions occur nearly every night, so check the schedule and go to a game with a promotion that interests you. Examples of promotions include free giveaways and appearances from professional athletes. For $5, kids can get a wrist band that grants them admission into several jump houses. Parking in the area can be very difficult. However, there is a very convenient shuttle bus from a parking area at gutterson field house to centennial field before the game, and back from the field to the parking area afterwords. Both of our experiences at Lake Monsters games at Centennial Field this season have been fantastic, and we would highly recommend that you attend a game soon :)
Especially great place to visit to catch a Lake Monsters baseball game. Arrive early for best Parking. Lots of fun activities for young kids, ages 5-12. Admission is cheap, go for it!
This is the oldest minor league baseball park in America. Larry Gardner played here (he played with Babe Ruth on the Red Sox).I have so many memories of great players that played at this park.....Ken Griffey Jr., Kal Daniels, Paul O'Neill, Omar Vizquel, Rob Dibble, and many more. I also remember getting Ted Klu's autograph when he was a batting instructor for the Reds. Last summer my son and I met Rickey Henderson as he was in town as a roving instructor for the A's. Got his sig also! Great park, great food, and great baseball. Now if they would only bring back the UVM baseball team that would be nice!
The field was great. The game was terrible. You can get very close to the action. The post-game fireworks were disappointing - they left the lights on!
The old Centennial Field has been through a lot. Its most recent iteration is as the home of the Lake Monsters baseball team, affiliated with the Oakland A's (of all teams.) We ended up going on a night that was mostly a pitching duel, with smoking balls flying across the plate at over 90 mph (according to the TD Banknorth billboard in center field - it's fun to watch, check it out.) That didn't result in a lot of actual ball playing, but the hoopla of the field was fun anyways. They play music, Champ dances around, they pull kids up on top of the dugout to play trivia and dance, and there are lots of other little goodies throughout the game. Food is predictably ridiculously expensive, and tonight there wasn't a lot of energy in the crowd. It was fun anyway, and we won, so that's always good. Even though the cheap seats were a LONG way from full (less than HALF,) they would only sell us the second tier, and I found that annoying even though it only cost a few more dollars. Also, the line took FOREVER with an old guy creaking around behind the desk. We were in line for over 25 minutes with less than 30 people in front of us. Ridiculous! Park outside of the field parking to save money and hassle, and print your tickets beforehand.
The Burlington Lake Monsters (affiliated with the Oakland A's) play baseball at the University of Vermont. It's especially fun for the kids. They do lots of fun things during the game - give aways & entertainment. Seats as low as $5.00 and lots to eat.
Always fun watching the game and Champ's antics! The kids fun zone is a hit, and all seats are right near the field. Easy to get autographs- Sunday we played catch in the outfield after the game!
