I simply love the Bilbao´s metro ! Modern ,fast and efficient . It is very clean also . So , if you are a turist in Bilbao ,you will remember the metro like one of the best in Europe :)
We like small metro systems. This one is fast, cheap, clean and safe. The centre of Bilbao isn't very large and can easliy be walked across, but when your legs get tired, hit the metro. Day Pass under €5
We were in Bilbao for a few days and the weather was perfect... we decided it would be nice to venture to the beach. Metro made it so easy 3.50 Euro return ticket for the day to travel from city centre Abando to Sopelana. It's less than a mile from the station to the waters edge, and the tourist information booth is on the way next to town hall. Metro ran on time and was very clean with good timetables available.
I have travelled all over and I think it's the best metro system I've used. Cheap. Efficient. Simple. They even ran right through the night for festival goers-what are the chances!?!! Super-handy!
Recently had the opportunity to use the Bilbao Metro system and was very impressed. Trains are clean, modern and quick and the cost very reasonable. We took a 30 minute journey from Getxo at a return cost of only 6.60 euros for 2 people. Why can't all big cities have something like this? My home town have been talking about a metro scheme for at least the past 35 years without getting any nearer to having one.
With staying in Sepolana we took the Metro into Bilbao and it was a nice experience. The trains are fairly modern and run on time. Most of the route is above ground and so you can do some sightseeing from the trains. Very reasonably priced for the service on offer and very friendly staff to help with the ticket machines.
The Metro of Bilbao is fast, reliable, pretty, modern and spacious. (Metro is also known as underground, U-bahn or subway). To use the metro you can buy a Barik card. It will cost you 3 euro and than you charge the card (Like the London Oyster card or the Dutch OV-chipkaart) with an amount of 5, 10, 20 or 50 euro. Traveling with this card will cost half in comparison with paper tickets and it takes only one second of your time. You buy and charge the card in the entrance hall of any Metro station. You can use coins, bills, bank card or credit card. When your card is charged with money you can start your way around the underground of Greater Bilbao. To enter you swipe your card across a Barik sign at one of the many entrance gates. It opens and you walk to your Metro. When you leave the Metro swipe the card again at the exit gates (the same as the entrance gates). The first time a standard fee is deducted from your card en the second time a small fee depending on the traveled distance
This mode of transportation used to be a lot cheaper, and I am not sure why they have raised the price so much, but it is clean, fast and very modern. It is very easy to use, and the ticket kiosks are in English as well as Euskera and Castillian.
Clean and efficient way to get around. Easy to use.
One of the most enjoyable days we had, while in Bilbao was when we took a 35 minute metro ride to Portulagete , a medieval fishing village on the banks of the Nervion River. When you exit the metro, ask anyone to point you in the direction of the "RIO " then find the Tourist Information Office right by the river where you will pick up a beautifully produced guide to the town . The sea front promenade gives you a front row seat to the spectacular Bizkaia Bridge which transports people and their cars to the opposite side of the river every few minutes. The architecture of the bridge is reminiscent of the Eiffel tower .This bridge has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage monument. Walk along the promenade and savor a fresh fish meal. Do not go on Monday, as the fishermen don't go out on Sunday and the Monday haul is not yet ready for consumption; so most fish restaurants are closed on Monday. Sadly, we learned this because we went on a Monday.....so benefit from our mistake..There is a charming old town to wander through and make sure to visit the 15th Century elegant Basilica of Santa Maria.Jut 35 minutes on the ultra-modern Metro from Bilbao and you are in another world !Enjoy.
OK it's not as cheap as it once was, but you can tell that this a relatively recent asset for Bilbao. Clean, secure, lots of space, decent frequencies, runs all night at the weekends & during fiestas. Creditrans is the easiset ticket for a weekend visit. The "fosteritos" - the snail shell-like entrances dotted around the city are icons of Bilbao. It's off the tourist trail, but I recommend a visit to Sarriko station - a cavernous feat of civil engineering, with glass elevators that shoot up and give you a great vertigo buzz! Then walk down into Deusto, check out the bridge and begin your walk along the river to the Guggenheim & the better known "sights". See Geu Magazine (google it, click on EN for English) for BAsque Country tourist information & inspiration
Thank you, Mr. Foster
