Hate to leave an average review, but with so much of natural beauty and things to do on the island, why would you spend your time here. Even in the Furnas area, there are so many things to do. But if you are really out of things to do, you can try this.
very informative and definitely a worthwhile visit. the center's architecture is amazing! the transformation of the lake and the surrounding area is an on going process. the "before"images are startling. great walk to a beautiful waterfall--enter at gothic church.
Quick way to learn about the lake and its surroundings and the staff are very cordial. Must stop place if visiting for the first time.
This center / museum really shows the life and challenges of living on top of a Volcano. It shows the effects of pollution, man and nature on a primeval ecosystem.
Really cool modern building and super friendly staff. Do the tour and the documentary movie, it is worth it. Walked around the whole lake after wards in the nice nature trails to the Furnas at the end of the lake where they cook stew in pots in the hot springs.
A wonderful eye opening insight into the work of conservation on these Islands. This project is monitoring and researching how to clean and maintain crater lakes in the Azores. The explanatory talk and graphics were second to none and the staff very knowledgeable and pleasant .Well worth a visit .
As part of our day trip to Furnas, we stopped at the Centre, The staff were able to talk knowledgably about the history of the lake and all the successful conservation efforts that are currently underway to save the land, the native plants, and the lake. Beautiful modern building, take time to have a coffee, and relax and admire the views.
The centre is very well worth a stop-off during a walk round the lake. Knowledgeable and motivated staff explain the restoration of the ecology of the lake and its surroundings. The centre is clean and has a cafe and small gift shop selling local products which contribute to the local economy and general fundraising. Highly recommended.
I found this to be a most welcoming and informative experience and an interesting part of our walk. Having enjoyed the walk from Furnas around the Lagoa I was ready and willing to take on the well explained and presented information from the excellent Paula. For a mere 2.5Euros this was surely great value. A welcome cup of coffee and a comfortable seat were added bonuses. Highly recommended.
You start with a video explaining the damage that has been done to Furnas lake and what they are doing to bring it back to life. This is followed by an interactive talk with pictures where you can ask the staff questions. There are also some exhibits you can go through to learn more. It's not a huge place but was an excellent and fascinating learning experience. Highly recommended. The gelato in the cafe is also very good and it's nice that anything you buy supports the centre.
We discovered this place by following a tour bus and the architecture of this construction was very interesting. The center is quite small, there is a room showing different demonstrations and graphs, and then another lecture room.We didn't get to spend more than 10 mins in there, but we really enjoyed ice cream time at the cafe there and it was such a great view of the lake and the environment is so relaxing. Would just love to go there and chill out.
The lake at Furnas and the surrounding area are absolutely beautiful and by visiting this centre, at a cost of just two Euros you learn so much about the work being done to restore the ecology of the lake. The staff are all friendly and informative and the building sits really nicely in its surroundings.
We loved the walking trails around Lake Furnas. The museum was very interesting, highlighting the ecological restoration work being done on the lake.
You park at the parking lot on the road, then walk in (about 10 minutes) to the Monitoring and Research Centre. The centre describes the work on restoration of the natural environment in the area. There also is a little coffee shop, gift shop (money supports the restoration activities) and clean toilet facilities. Everyone we spoke to really enjoyed their visit, as we did.
Very beautiful area where some of the history of the island is revealed throughout the ecologic program for the revitalization of this lake. The staff was very nice and the walk around the lake is beautiful despite its problem. The architecture of the center is well though and modernly beautiful and there are nice sculptures also around the lake.
