The Horcher winery is a family winery specialising in white wines. They produce about 12 different wines, ranging from Pinot Blanc to Gwertzminer, Cremant and Tardive styles. While generally red drinkers, we were very pleasantly surprised by the Horcher white wines. They are considerably different in taste and complexity from those we are used to in Australia. We were amazed to find that we enjoyed each of the wines. Generally when visiting a winery for a tasting, we find that we enjoy certain wines and not others. Horcher wines were all pleasing to the palate. Our favourite is the Grand Cru - Mandalberg. Despite tasting numerous wines in the area, we found ourselves returning to Horcher, particualrly for the Mandalberg and the Cremant Rose. As well as tasting the wines, Horcher winery is worth a visit as the family are charming and knowledgeable about their wine.
This was the best wine tasting we did in Alsace by far. Though there are plenty of degustations around Alsace, we wanted someone to explain the various wines and grapes, etc... The daughter in this family speaks great English and was super helpful and informative. They in no way pressured you or expected you to buy a lot of wine. We were very glad we went out of our way to make this stop!
We visited the Horcher vineyards right in the middle of harvesting time and the people working there were really busy. But even while being extremely busy with their work they still had time to show us the full spectrum of Horcher wines which we thorougly enjoyed and ended up buying lots of!Warmly recommend this place to everyone going up and down the Wine Route!
We have been visiting the Horcher family for about 10 years now and have always enjoyed the tastings. Freddy and Irene are amazing people who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Nowadays it's Thomas who steals the show! We have always win praise back home while savouring their wines with friends. If you intend to visit the Alsace region try to pay them a visit you won't regret it
We enjoyed a fantastic wine tasting in the caves of the family Horcher. The wines are excellent and we could try any wine (even the Tardives!). The tour through the cave was very enjoyable, thanks to Thomas. We are looking forward going back to Mittelwihr for more of the excellent wines!
Even though it was offseason, we got away for a long weekend for our anniversary and were lucky to book one of two apartments at Horcher. Irene and Freddy took very good care of us, we walked a nice albeit cold tour of their vinyard; a thorough tour of the wine process and a sampling of all their varieties. We were treated as old friends, even after just meeting them. Horcher is a small independent winery, nearly 100,000 bottle per season are produced, but this is what sets it apart from the larger producers. The majority of the work is performed by family, even their nearly ninety year old mother contributes to the process. I hope the tradition continues as they pass along the business to their childen. Great location with a short drive to many terrifi villages along La Route Des Vins. We spent two days traveling through Ribeauville, Riquewihr, Kayserberg and many small villages in between. Mittlewihr is a quant, centrally located spot with some very nice restaurants. We will be back, hopefully before we run low on our wine. See you soon!
We were offered a 'degustation' when staying at one of the Horchers' gites - an advantage, as we didn't have to worry about driving home afterwards! We tasted the full range of Horcher wines with the opportunity to compare and learn about the differences, followed by a tour of where they are made and stored. Freddie was entertaining, enthusiastic and seemed very happy to spend hours with us sharing his passion for wine. As a result of the quantities imbibed our memories were a little hazy afterwards, but Freddie was equally patient and enthusiastic a few days later when we asked if we could taste a few wines again before deciding which to buy. Having sampled a fair amount of Alsace wine at different vineyards during our trip, we thought the quality chez Horcher was high and the prices very reasonable. Overall, a memorable and very enjoyable experience.
