I was here for a conference being held at the Prehistory Museum of Solutré at the foot of this rock on the 5 & 6 February 2015. The conference ended with a hike to the summit of La Roche. Well worth it despite the cold wind! The views from up here were spectacular even with grey skies. from here you can see the village of Solutré below and the Vergisson Rock in the distance connected by countless vineyards. If you're visiting I'd really recommend a visit to the museum to better interpret this spectacular site!

This is an outstanding (in both meanings of the word) feature in the landscape and visible from miles around. We climbed up one way past the super museum and back down the other side on a lovely day with superb views all around. If you want a break from wine tasting this is a very rewarding and interesting short walk :)

Solutre is a lovely landscape feature...a beautiful rock promintory jutting out of the surrounding vineyards and also a fascinating archeological-anthropological park. The museum and gardens are very well done, informative regarding paleolithic inhabitants of the area, and a peaceful spot in the countryside. It is worth several hours, at least. The surrounding area is worth exploring as there are numerous small villages and two other prominent rock formations. A highlight of south Burgundy, beyond the wine tasting.

Very difficult path to the top, broken up and stony. We decided not to attempt it as my husband's knees are troublesome. Definitely take walking sticks, even if you're young and fit!

This was a great surprise! We walked to the top on a very hot day. The views from the top absolutely amazing. So many people sat at the summit admiring the vista in the sunshine. Well worth the trek. We planned to go to the teashop also the museum at the bottom, but alas there was a huge down poor and thunder and lightening with hailstones. We had no umbrella and got absolutely drenched. Returned to our hotel which was not too far away. Also found a wine cooperative which we returned to for a little degustation and a few purchases.

I have reviewed the museum itself and highly recommend it. It is one of the most interesting and well organized of any I have seen anywhere!

Very beautiful rock : good new steps for easier climbing. After a nice walk through wild nature, very nice view over all the surrounding region.

Yes it's a rocky outcrop! It stands out proudly surrounded by vineyards in this quite stunning part of France. We visited as part of a coach group and it was the ideal stop to get a first impression of the area.Next time we will park up and take a walk as it looked so pleasant.

Several improvements have been made to the site recently for the ever increasing tourist numbers, but all have been positive. Even the trails are constantly being improved without disturbing the surrounding nature. I always recommend this site to visitors to the region.

Very impressive landscape; huge rock rising from the middle of vineyards. It's really worth climbing it to see surroundings. The area is great for trekking.

Soultre dominates the Maconnais and should not be missed. The museum and gardens are small but interesting and the fee is fair. On a fair day you can see to Mont Blanc, but it was a bit overcast the day we visited. Blue badge holders can park outside the museum up the track which significantly reduces the climb.

We visited the Roche with our two children - 6 and 9. This is an amazing site, with an excellent museum at the start of the walk which explains the evidence uncovered at the base of the site relating to early man's use and interaction with with La Roche - including a complete debunking of the myth that horses were herded from the top of it as part of a hunting ritual (thousands of horse skeletons have been found at the bottom). The walk up the hill is relatively easy if a little rocky (I wouldn't want to try and take a push chair up there for example) and takes about 40 mins. There isn't much shade on the way up so take hats and water if it's a hot day but the views from the top are magnificent. Take time out to feel the sense if awe and wonder our ancestors must have done millennia ago.

Obviously best to go on a clear day, when it is preferably not too hot or windy. Useful coffee shop and 'facilities' near to museum (closed for refurbishment when we were there in June). Relatively easy walk up from the car park and then a choice of descents, take care to end up in right valley!

I wasn't able to take the climb up to the top. It was still abit cold and windy for my kids. But to just be here...took me back in time. Anyone can feel that. The La Roche looks and feels so ancient. The vineyards that make the Pouilly fuisse wines were so beautiful. Lovely experience. There is parking available below the La Roche. Cars are not allowed up. To go up you walk.

It was a nice walk, not so extremely special, but the view at the top is worth it. I think it took us about 40min to climb it, it's not super steep, any regular person can walk it. We stayed about 30 min on top and we had a picknick with a very wide view on the Burgundy fields.
