This is keeper. No uphills all down or flat. Options for drinks along the way and the best part, you drop the bike at the Lienz train station and train back to San Condido.
This bike ride is 50 percent in the sun, on a sunny day...and 50 percent in the shade due to trees. We stopped at the chocolate factory on the trail, but it was Saturday and there were not any tours, but we were told you can book ahead on line ( would suggest if interested). Currently the factory is in expansion and there is lots of construction. There are many stops for food and drink along the way. We peddled and passed everyone, stopped twice for drink/ food and the trip took 5-6 hours. It is not a two hour trip as I read in many reviews...even if you peddle fast this 2 hours would be difficult. The transfer of the bike back and riding the train is a great option and very easy. It is a delightful way to spend the day.....highly recommend.
We got the train from Lienz, 15 Euro's each including bike. You get off in San Candido with loads of others doing the same thing. Trip starts off in San Candido village so you are on the roads for a bit but there is a cycle lane and we found that motorists are very considerate of cyclists. Once out of San Candido you are on dedicated cycle paths all the way to lienz (about 45 kms away). The cycling isn't difficult since you are mostly coming downhill or on flat terrain following the river. Nice views all along. Worth doing its about a half day outing including the train ride.
The ride from San Candid was nice but not fabulous. It is catered for well by the public transport system and the bike hire shops, and many many other cyclists will be doing this alongside you, including families with very small children. Some of the stretches through the Austrian Forrest are lovely.
Very enjoyable route meandering around small villages and splendid views of the alps. The route is suitable for families and those seeking a traffic-free track
Before renting a bike you can visit the small mountain town of San Candido, with its beautiful churches, the indoor Acquafun pool, and maybe a ride on the fun bob. The route to Lienz is actually part of St.James Way to Compostela. There are beautiful stops on the path and you can leave your bike in Lienz and return effortlessly by train.
The way from San Candido to Lienz is beautiful, all cycling in the woods downhill! simply amazing! The way back is a way harder, since the whole path is uphill, either only slightly or quite a bit!! me and my boyfriend made it there and back on the same day: a bit tiring but exciting and satisfying! now there's the possibility to leave the bike in Lienz for 5€ and to take the train back! a good option if you want to spend some more time in the city (which is rather beautiful by the way)! But if you like the adrenaline of a good ride, try to make it back as well....it took us less than 2 hours to get to Lienz, and 3 and a half hours back (including a 30 minutes stop at the Loacker factory - awesome shop)!!! Definitely a amazing day out!! (only 18€ to rent a bike for the whole day!)
This is an easy, almost all downhill, bicycle track going from San Candido (Italy) to Lienz (Austria), along the river Drau. You can rent the bicycle at the beginning of the 45-km track and then let yourself go for a 5-hour journey in beautiful sceneries. There is service for the bikes if you have problems and rest areas or little restaurants along the way if you are thirsty. The finish line is near Lienz’ swimming pool and very close to the railway station. Bikes can be loaded on the train which takes you right back to San Candido. A wonderful day for family and friends, easy path and lots of fresh air.
take a bike, or a tandem, and bring some keyway with you. Enjoy some 5 hours of scenic views of the beautful valleys. Come back from Lienz railway station.
I've done it biking and its very nice slightly downhill and with the train to go back to S Candido when you arrive in Lienz. But its also very nice for runners like me. You can even combine the two things. amaizing.
My suggestion: rent a bike in Dobbiaco or San Candido, have a nice 2 hours diping down till Lienz, have lunch and then take the train to come back in Italy!
Bellissima gita, consigliata particolarmente a famiglie.
