We were there for a daily mass in Italian and it was quite powerful...The ceiliing paintings were quite beautiful as well
Fantastic building but don,t be put off by the drab exterior! Go inside and take a look.Make sure that you visit the crypt where many people were praying at the tomb of the saint .
One of the most beautiful basilicas which I have seen. Several gentlemen were there to help you to learn of its history and importance to the city of Bari
We enjoyed our visit to this historic place. It is very beautiful inside. Lots of beggers outside the basilica though.
Unfortunately being restored...difficult to see the outside, but very beautiful inside...waters edge, cool severe almost undecorated
certainly worth a visit if you find yourself in Bari....free entry.Crypt was pretty cool......nice church
The church impresses by simplicity. The crypt requires respect and admiration. We were there before 6 December celebrations and we have seen the service of removing the statue of St. Nicholas and placing it in the altar. With holiday lights around the church atmosphere was unique.
If you are visiting Bari then this is a must see. Very nice place in front of the waterfront. Free entrance and no queue. Impressive from the outside. Its like nothing you have seen before becuase there's two churches in one. Uneasy to forget that this is a Basilica designed and built so long ago to keep the Nicolaus bones safe.Awesome!
The whiteness of its walls. The irregularity of its structure. The vastity of its interior. The charm of the crypt.
Very beautiful basilica with a impressive basement.I had no idea about the involvement of St Nicholas in Bari
This is a Roman Catholic cathedral with a Russian Orthodox church with St Nicholas's 'relics' in the crypt. The simple Romanesque building is very attractive we found but the most special element is the crypt where the Russian Orthodox priest was chanting a service beautifully. This is a place of great pilgrimage to the Orthodox church and we passed a large group arriving as we were leaving. a very special house of God.
The "Basilica di San Nicola" is a wonderful spot not to be missed in Bari, Italy. It is well venerated by local and foreigners. It's an experience in it's own right.Recommended.
We arrived in Bari without any plans or tours organised and after doing a circuit we found the Basilica. There are amazing frescos and the crypt downstairs was quite eerie. Be prepared for crowds but if you visit later in the day you can get some great photos without lots of tourists. We arrived on a Sunday and there was a mass and a christening in the small chapel in the corner of the square so lots of crowds. Worth a visit
The architecture of this church is unique, combining the simplicity of the aisles with the incredible richness of the paintings on the roofs. Not to mention the intimacy of the crypt, where Christians from all confessions pray together hand in hand. A must while in Bari, regardless of your own confession or beliefs
A wonderful church and a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture (12th century) with a mix of Byzantine (Eastern) and Latin (Western) styles. The must-see places are the facade, the apse and the crypt, with its ceiling and the amazing columns dating back from Roman times, the tomb of St Nicholas and a great Byzantine icon. If you have the chance, take your time to watch both a Catholic and an Orthodox prayer.
