We recently (late sept) went through Asciano going from Siena and eventually winding up in montepulciano. What amazing views generally from both sides of the road. The camera got a workout. Not quite what one expects in tuscany. The grey fields were so unusual although my agriturismo owner noted that in the spring when the wheat begins to grow, the fields are lush green and the whole area look like a golf course. A must see if you're anywhere near Siena.

Not what you think of when you think Tuscany quite other worldly. The name is derived from the clay ( crete) that surrounds Siena ( Senesi)

Surely one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world! If you travel by car from Siena to the south, forget the highway and take Via Lauretana (SS 438) towards Asciano. The route makes you feel you're travelling in a dream. Unique images, absolutely beautiful with a touch of magic, I daresay. It's a road trip never to escape your memory and one you'll want to experience more than once.

I was enjoying biking, trekking and fishing in a spectacular but calm atmosphere! There are tracks which are taking you in very quite places where you can hear only the wind and the birds.

I simply don't understand the fuss and reviews on the basis of this being a classic Tuscan view as it isn't; the best views are to be had from the hilltop towns and include vines, olive groves, rolling hills with mountains beyond punctuated by cypress trees and old buildings. This however is a far more bleak and desolate landscape with eroded clay escarpments as scars on a normal cultivated agricultural area. It is on route to a number of very attractive places to the south of Siena so if passing through the area you are going to see it but I would not go out of my way for this.

Beautiful area, best views of the Italian country side. This is a must see for those traveling through Italy.

Straight out of science fiction. I am surprised they don't film James Bond films here as a background. The lush landscape gives way to desolate dunes in mounds. Begins at the Benedictine abbey olivette, another very wonderful destination

If you are looking for classic Tuscan views of lone cypress trees, rolling fields of greens and multiple shades of brown punctured with the white of the sharp ridges, isolated farmsteads with drives line with trees - then drive through The Crete. It is stunning and there are places to stop safely and take those wonderful pictures. There are a number of routes we started at Taverne d'Arbia and headed towards Asciano. Some of the roads are twisty and some are very narrow but it is well worth it. End the trip at Montalcino and you will be rewarded with the views from the Fortezza, a lovely lunch and excellent wine - this is the home of the Brunello. Driving back - the shadows and colours will have changed so you'll have a whole new set of photos to take.

Awesome Tuscan drive through hills, small towns, grain fields, truffle region, and vineyards. Some very cool hill towns along the way. We cruised up towards Siena and then made our way back to Castiglion Fiorentino along the Crete Senesi route. Make sure to stop at the smaller towns and grab some wine at Montepulciano in one of the areas many tasting rooms.

The Crete Senesi, the spectacular landscape between Asciano and Siena, is definitely one of the most spectecular regions in the world. Unesco inheritage, stunning views and sometimes really dangerour because people stop their cars wherever they like in order to take the picture of their life.

We were with Collette Tours and we stayed in a castle in the heart of Crete Senesi. Usually, tourists pay extra to be taken to this place for photo ops. This area is absolutely enchanting with its green, gentle, rolling hills dotted with Tuscan farmhouses and lines of Italian cypress. We were in the middle of nowhere, hence there was no name of a town. We were only 40 minutes from Florence and in the other direction, 40 minutes from Sienna. It was so peaceful there and our view from the hotel grounds of the rolling hills was gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. Ahh, this was Tuscany at its best, Tuscany as romantics would view it. I would go back there in a hearbeat.

Beautiful rolling hills, farms and crowned by Siena--a spectacular Renaissance city. Winding roads go through tiny towns and by monasteries, wineries and lead to lovely villages, such as Montalcino.

Walk through this area and avoid all the crowds and get to know the real Tuscany and meet real people where they live and work We had 2 weeks of it . Superb

amazing part of the tuscan hills often gets missed on regular tours of the area which focus on chianti hills and towns. ideal for drive (probably even better by bike) plenty of options for eating and sleeping in the many small towns in the area.

Ho visitato spesso le Crete senesi ma a febbraio l'ho fatto percorrendo lo sterrato della strada chiamata "Eroica" e sono rimasta senza fiato ammirando tutti i colori ed i molteplici laghetti artificiali, da non perdere.
