Rathausplatz "Auf der Brück": houses with woodcarving bay windows show the civil consciousness of the 17th century (Hans Bellinghausen wrote 1929 in his local newspaper “wohl als Zunfthäuser anzusprechen” (actually to be refered to as Guild houses). There is no evidence that there were any guilds in Rhens as the city was probably too small for such: a Guild House was also a venue for meeting and Conference of craftsman associations, these houses, however, are without any doubt homes. House nr. 7 from 1671, nr 8 from 1659, parapet under carvings on nr 7 and no 8 with erker figurative reliefs, nr 9 cluster shape with four floors and load and unload bay window./ Langstraße 1: 17th century / Langstraße 2: mid-16th century / Langstraße 9: Jewish prayer house (former synagogue) / Langstraße 23: with Rococo door / Langstraße 39: 1629, corner pillars and carved bay window / Neustraße 3: 1739, cluster shape with protruding bay window like Dormer / Viehgasse 2: 1572, with narrow lean-to / Hochstraße 6: with double floor Bay window / Hochstraße 7 and 8: both from 17th century. According to Bruno Krings, whose family once owned these houses, these were former winetrade houses. Broad corridors, in which a small car would be able to drive, lead to a courtyard, the cellar was located under the houses / Hochstraße 8 served 19th and early 20th century as butchery / Hochstraße 7: half-timbered House, the name of its owner was found in old tax-lists: councillar Johann Wilhelm Moda and his wife Anna Margarethe, née Müller. The House bears an inscription of an unusual motto which does not contain a Bible verse but quotes by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso from his work “Epistulae ex Ponto” (letters from the Black Sea region, verses written in exile). Verses: probat utilitate amicitiam Vulgus (common people appreciated friendship after their advantage), Amicus sed usque ad aras (a real friend comes along to the altar { to swear he is a true friend), Malorum invidia fortuna (the envy of poor people is a symbol for their own happiness {if people envy me I may consider myself as lucky) / Hochstraße 14: 1579, in 1946 rebuilt in old wood, corner bay window / Hochstraße 20: Marienbildchenhaus / Hochstraße 21: mid 16th century / Hochstraße 24: inscription 1702, cluster shaped, with Dormer window / Deutsches Haus: along the Rhine enbankment on the corner between the Rhineport and the city wall, from 1566: two high dormers, built-in spiral staircase with wooden spindle (central pillar) / Wackelburg: 1573, with open gallery at the courtyard, located south of the Rhineport. Hotel Königstuhl with mansard roof and Dormer window: construction end 18th century. Beautiful stairwell, murals remind to painter Wilhelm von Kügelgen († 1867) who lived temporarily in the “Deutschen Haus”, located next to the Wackelburg.
Rhens is een ontdekking waard. De parte bezienswaardigheden zijn misschien op zich niet allemaal de moeite waard, maar als geheel is dit top. Je stapt uit de trein en loopt een heerlijk stadje binnen. Prachtige vakwerkhuizen en huisjes bepaeln het beeld. Ook het stadhuis mag er wezen. Het uitzicht op de Rijn is fraai en je ben binnen een half uur in KOoblenz.... Er is een kerk die het bekijken waard s en je vindt hier leuke winkeltjes. Maar het stadje zelf blijft de meest belangrijke attractie. Wie van dit soort huisjes e.d. houdt is hier op zijn plaats.
