cistercian abbey our blessed lady

Very well preserved and maintained abbey founded in the 12th century but the large church wasn't completed until 1751. We have stopped here numerous times to visit the grounds but also the cafe/bakery/bar. There is a guest house too but we've never stayed there. They have a contract brewing agreement with a brewery in Belgium that brews authentic and tasty abbey beer that they sell on draft and in bottles. This is a fun little diversion if you're touring the Eifel and only about 15 minutes north of E42. Open weekdays 09.00-11.30, 14.30-17.00 and Saturdays 09.00-11.30. Closed on Sundays.

Nestled in in the valley of the Salm you come across this beautifully rebuilt abbey and grounds that traces it origins back to St Bernard of Clairvaux who founded the Abbey in 1134. Much has changed since those days due to the abbey falling to neglect, some wars, etc. but the current setting and buildings are breathtaking as well as being a very quiet/serene stop on a busy trip.
