Fun and very educational. Rothenburg Old Town is like something out of a Brothers Grimm story! There are shops of every type. Clothing both modern as well as traditional. Excellent coffee shops, great restaurants and wonderful bakeries (yummm)!!
This town is nicely preserved. It is quite extensive, too. If one happens to be in the area, it is a good idea to visit. However, the hordes of tourists from cruise ships spoiled my day in Rothenburg a bit. I have nothing against tourists from cruise ships ( I go on cruises too), but medieval towns are best enjoyed when there are few people around. There are lots of shops to cater to visitors. Didn't buy anything though. Just walking on the cobblestones and looking at the old buildings were enough for me.If you visit, try to avoid the peak season. Even in April, this town was overrun with tourists.
The town is very beautiful, all buildings and streets appear as they would have hundreds of years ago. Many shops selling traditional fare and souvenirs.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber has a medieval city centre. Beautiful restaurated houses, streets etc.Its worth a visit. It also lies at the "Romantische Strasse" ( a touristic route). Its a 10 minutes drive from the A7 autobahn. For information see: http://www.tourismus.rothenburg.de
We had only 5 days in Munich for a group of ten and yes, this is on top on our list, giving up Nuremburg. It's good enough for a day trip from Munich and the kids love it, taking in the sights and climbing and walking around the walls. Allocate enough time from the train station to the town and back if you are not staying at Rothenburg. Great place for souvenirs and wine/schnapps from the Franconia region. Everybody from the group grab two bottles at least and enjoy a few sips at the lookout points.
the shops in this beautiful town are all worth a look with great souvineers and cake shops selling the local cake 'schneeballen' snowballs, brilliant place.
