This was an interesting ride with grand views of the River Rhine towards Bonn and Cologne to the North and and great views to the South as well.
Apart from some rather disaffected sullen ladies on the tills, the system works well, with the conductors happy to wait a bit for you if you have difficulty hurrying to catch the train. The views are interesting, and the middle stop serves the Castle. Worth the trip price if you, like us, are not good hill-walkers. The lower station has interpretive materials about the sites and the construction of the railway.
For those who love to see the nature and yet dont have the capacity to climb up walking , then this is a good choice. But I suggest to take a walk, its more healthy & fun if you are with your friends.
I had a very pleaseant day trip to Drachenfel Mountain. I purchased a train ticket in Cologne for a train that travels on the east side of the Rhine (past Bonn Airport) which stops at Konigswinter. Note when purchasing the ticket that there is two dots over the O as thereis in Koln!. Takes about an hour. Leaving the train it is an easy walk to Konigswinter main street (10 mins) Very pleasing old German Town with some half timbered houses. At the end of the street take left and go under the autobahn and the clog railway terminal is in front of you up a slight hill. I believe the train ticket is 10 euros return. Anyway the train goes up the side of the mountain to the top when you are presented with an amazing view of the Rhine Valley. You can have a beer at the restaurant and/or climb a little further to the old castle ruins before returning to Konigswinter. Haly way down you can stop off at Schloss Drachenburg 6 euros - well worth a visit. On the way back to the train drop into Eis Cafe Venezia on right of main street for the most amazing ice cream sundae
The Drachenfelsbahn is clean, regular, efficient and fun to ride. The view of the Rhine at the top is not to be missed. The restaurant at the top is exceptional in its service and food and reasonably priced. the pleasant base station sells ice creams, souvenirs, etc. 10 Euros for a return ticket may seem a little high but we walked back down from the Scloss to the base station and it was hard work! Without the train few would be able to attempt the climb so the price is worth it. Besides, funicular railways are not cheap to maintain. Additionally, when we visited, the charge for the car park had been suspended. Full marks! A good attraction!
The railway runs steeply up to the mountain top with fabulous views across country and the Rhine. At mid-station is a Schloss with beuatiful garden. Very interesting steep rack railway with pleasant and helpful staff The cost - from memory 10 euro [or less if you walk down] is not excessive for what this is
We took this train up the mountain to visit the drachenfels, The train is a comfortable ride up the mountains with breath taking views . Easy and convenient way to acess the castle
we took the bahn up to the plateau with great view of the Rhein and the town, visited the drachenburg ruine and then walked down to the Schloss Drachenburg
We took this cute little train up the mountain to visit Drachenfels, the ruins on the top of the mountain. It was an enjoyable ride but there was a scramble as people seemed to want to sit in the front to take photographs during the ride. All three times we boarded the train, we encountered people who seemed willing to shove others aside in order to reach their preferred seats so if you want to sit in the front of the train, be prepared to arrive early, move quickly and be assertive or you may be 'bulldozed' by someone else who has the same goal. The ride itself was smooth, a reasonable price and crossed some interesting country. We appreciated the fact that we could also get off half-way to visit Schloss Drachenburg, which we did on the way down. The tickets were checked at each boarding, however, so be sure you don't lose yours - one member of our party was almost unable to join us because of a misplaced ticket and was fortunate to find it just before the doors to the train closed - the conductor was perfectly willing to leave that person behind until the ticket could be produced.Overall, everyone in our party enjoyed the train ride and would recommend it to others.
This train trip is a great way to get up and down the mountain when checking out Schloss Drachenburg and Drachenfels. Quick, easy and convenient with a hint of fun.
An easy way to get up the hill to the castle and viewpoint, with a good quality cafe at the top. The tickets we had were 2 way, and we could get ioff halfway up to visit the Schloss.
We enjoyed our ride up the mountain on the Drachenfels railway. You can break your journey half way to visit the 19th century castle of Schloss Drachenburg (which is well worth doing as it is both interesting and attractive) then re-board the train to get to the top of the mountain to either admire the views over the Rhine or walk up to the very top to see the ruins of the old castle. At the top is a modern café and free toilets. At the bottom is a rather nice gift shop and a model of the Drachenfels railway. If you are in the Bonn area or are near Konigswinter then I recommend taking this half day trip.
We liked it's slow motion of the train, slowly gaining altitude, reminding us of other travel times. Very relaxing! Destinations are lovely: Drachenfells on top and Schloss Drachenburg in the middle. Enjoy!
I initally opted to walk up the hill but decided to go ahead and purchase 3 attractions for price of 1 which included the Drachenfelsbahn. It was an enjoyable ride up the top of the hill and to the schloss.
