From XIV century to XVIII Turkey made this fortress very important in this part of future european history.
It is mostly marked by Turkish signature, but has older-Roman, and more recent constructions. There is Hamam, Mosque, Saloon, Roman monument, a new building which is part of National Archive... I liked it.
The exterior walls are impressive. And, there are some buildings inside the fortress with English signs. But, mostly this is a urban park. Lots of the locals strolling through the park.
The Nis Fortress, and the enclosed park, provide a great opportunity to escape from the more hectic city centre area. The Fortress itself is still well maintained, with a handful of local stalls just inside the Fortress. Beyond that, there is sufficient green, open space to relax for a while, before heading back into Nis centre and the hustle and bustle that ensues.
It is definitely the highlight of Nis. A nice place to stroll around for 1-2 hours. You can walk around on the walls. Some of the buildings are not really in good shape and are primarily used as wild toilets.
The fortress of Nis is not the biggest and best in the world, but it is definitely worth the visit and the time to spend alone or with friends or family. Inside the walls there are tons of beautiful details and is definitely a place worth visiting if you are near Nis.
The Nis fortress is not something special. There is nothing special to see. This is like a fortress in Belgrade
Though not as grand as Kalemegdan in Belgrade, Niš Fortress is very historic with buildings, food, shops and a nice place to take a stroll or ride a bike.
Nice place of serbian heritage..its in downtown of city....just near a small river..nice histiric place..
an exellent place to go party, eat, meet new people, or just relax during a hot day in green shades of the trees in this historical monument/park
it was full of tourists, but it looked nice and we took our time visiting, no tax at the entrance, close to the centre, very emblematic for the city
This fortress breaths in the spirit of all the nations that have gone through it. Celts, Romans, Turks even Germans were here. You could have a coffee here, even eat some traditional Serbian food. Also, you can walk around fortress walls which gives you spectacular view around city. During august, in this fortress is being held one of the biggest jazz festivals on the planet - Nisville. Deffinitely worth visiting Nis during this festival.
Niš Fortress is a fortress in the city of Niš, on the south of Serbia.Complex and important cultural and historical monument. It rises on the right bank of the Nišava River, overlooking the area inhabited for longer than two millennia old.The extant fortification is of Turkish origin, dating from the first decades of the 18th century (1719–1723). It is well known as one of the most significant and best preserved monuments of this kind in the mid-Balkans. The Fortress was erected on the site of earlier fortifications - the ancient Roman, Byzantine, and later yet Medieval forts. Here, in summer- August happens famous Jazz festival- Nisville. Every year this event becoming more and more organizing, with big names, good music, lot of people- domain and foreigners, good energy and a lot satisfied faces. Niš,as as city, has its special soul and a lot of talented people came from here. Now they have big project working on called "New Nis", so personally I have big expectations how this town is going to look like in a future with all of his values.Worth to visit. Specially in summer.
We visti the palve on sunday morning. Was very good.No people.Fortress wall in good conditions.Central gate also. There are some old buildings in it from Turkish time. The best history palce in Nis.
Adjacent to the outdoor market place, this historic structure is expansive and well maintained throughout with various points of interest to admire or tour along the way. Food and drink can be obtained and there are plenty of spots to rest one's feet.
