On a recent overnight trip to Eger, my Hungarian cousin, my husband, and I had the pleasure of touring this family-owned winery, and then having a scrumptious supper in the cellar. As the laws in Hungary allow a 0% blood-alcohol level when driving, we decided to take a taxi from our apartment in Eger out into the countryside to the winery, and then back again after our meal was finished. This was a wise choice, as the wine pairings offered with the substantial meal would have been a shame to miss!. If you arrange for a taxi, try to negotiate a cheaper round-trip price than the first one you are quoted,We were the only English-speaking guests visiting that evening, so having my bilingual cousin with us was a bonus. As well, the winery owner’s daughter, Eva Thummerer, spoke excellent English, and she was very happy to explain things to us as the night progressed. We started with a tour of the wine cellars, which were extensive and interesting. The cellars have been carved into volcanic rock, and have natural climate control. One of the largest wine-aging barrels in Hungary is located here! There was noble mold growing throughout the cellar, and this added to the old-world charm. After the tour, our meal began in one of the cellars. This was a lovely venue for this wonderful meal! We began with a plate of Hungarian-made artisan cheeses. The winery staff travels over 70 KM to buy this cheese from a small, craft cheese-making company. All of the choices were very tasty! The main course consisted of roasted potatoes and oven-roasted duck that were cooked in separate crocks for hours inside a kiln. This method of cooking made the meat and potatoes tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Rounded off with fresh cabbage salad, the freshest bread you could imagine, and crisp pickles, this meal would rival any first-class restaurant in Budapest! The white and red wines were paired perfectly with the food selections. Traditional Hungarian desserts finished of the meal, which were paired with a sweet white wine. Thanks so very much to Eva Thummerer for being more than generous with her time that evening, as she stopped by our table before every course to explain the food and the wine in English. We were able to buy wines after the meal, and the prices were unbelievably reasonable. This winery earns a high rating for many reasons!

Very good and interesting experience. We had a guided tour in the impressive , huge cellars of a this family run winery. The tour was run by the owners'daughter a beautiful and proffesional woman.Later we had a guided wine tasting accompanied by a great meal. The beaf from the oven in red wine saucewas mouth melting and wines!!!!! what a treat. I loved the most their best red wine named after the grandfather- Papi. Of course you can make a good deal purchase in the winery. An absolute must in Eger region.

As part of a boarding group, I were treated to a tour of this family-owned winery's extensive cellars, cut into volcanic tuff and covered with black mold, followed by dinner and wine tasting. The owner's daughter led the tour and conducted the tasting. We learned about the cellaring methods used in this part of Hungary, both oak barrels and steel vats. Thummerer makes a wide variety of wines, including the Hungarian specialties Egri Bikavér (bull's blood) and tokaj.Dinner included tastings of seven of the wines, along with an excellent meal of Hungarian cuisine at its best. We learned about each of the wines as they were presented, and of course bottles were available for sale later (at prices far more reasonable than at the airport, I later discovered). I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Eger area.

Everyone who travels near Eger, must try these wines. Better to ask for a wine tasting dinner- best wine tasting menu ever with beautiful wines. Thanks

Vilmos Thummerer and his winery have won all the official accolades in Hungary and is well respected. About 70% or so of their output is consumed by the domestic market which is the loss for the rest of the World. However, their wines are (or have been last time I have looked) for purchase at the duty-free at Ferihegy Airport in Budapest, so pick up a bottle of Vili Papa 2006 and enjoy (2009 release in the near future). Now about the winery tour... Eva Thummerer, Mr Thummerer's daughter is the tour guide and gracious host. She is very proud of the winery and knows its history and all their wines inside out. The cellar complex is outright fantastic: and old cellar, now extended with a new section shows you how a wine cellar develops. Nature was magnanimous to the Thummerers: it gave them something a lot of wine makers envy... a natural, constant temperature and humidity storage facility to mature their wines. The noble mold growing on the walls and the barrels lined up along the walls... Loved it!If you want to visit a natural wine cellar this is highly recommended (if you are more in for the artificial kind, OPUS in Napa, California is also a fantastic experience).

All I can say is WOW!!! The cool venue, fabulous wines and delicious food made for an evening I will never forget...from what I can remember, that is. Haha. ;) An absolute must if you love wine/wineries and are visiting that part of the world!! (I was there at the beginning of the summer of 2012 - ignore the June 2013, it wouldn't let me select from 2012.)

We had a great evening at the Thummerer Winery. After a nice tour through the cellars and learning a lot about the wine we got to enjoy a great dinner and a lot of wine tasting. The people are very nice and the atmosphere is amazing.

We were here with a group of people for a wedding in June. They showed us around the cellars, then feed us a magnificent meal in a cavern like room. They were fantastic hosts, explaining all the nuances of their wines, and pairing them perfectly with local cuisine.

I arrived here after flying to Budapest and a long car ride... and it was SO worth it! The wine, attention, place and the food were all excellent. You can really tell that people working there really enjoy what they are doing. I can only recommend this place. Don't miss it.

We visited the winery with a group of approx. 100 people the day prior to a wedding party. We got a great guided tour and subsequently a great meal with 7 different wines to taste. For every wine there was a professional explanation. Atmosphere was very pleasant. This is definitely the best winery where we have ever been.

We were looking for a winery near Eger that had good wines and ambiance for one of our wedding parties. So a friend of ours, who is a wine connoisseur and expert on the region, recommended we check out Thummerer because it had just won wine cellar of the year in Hungary. And after meeting the owner, we were sold. Eva was very friendly, showed us the beautiful cellar (which was exactly what we were looking for), and gave us a few amazing wines to taste. We knew this would be the perfect location for the party and it exceeded our expectations. We were served some of the finest wines in the region to go with a delicious meal made from home grown ingredients. If you're looking for a place to host a party, we highly recommend you try Thummerer Pince.

We held a wine tasting dinner at Thummerer for 120 of our friends and family for a wedding party and, not only were the wines delicious but the food was unbelievably tasty as well. We tasted 8 different wines in total, each complimenting the 4 course dinner that it was paired with. The food was fresh, home grown and cooked in a kiln for hours for maximum tenderness and flavours. Everyone had a great time and it was a lot of people's favourite event of our 4 day program in the region. We loved it so much that we returned months later to take part in a cooking course that they offer. At the cooking course, we had an 8 course dinner, with the owner/chef showing us how they prepare each course. We will return again for sure!

Judging wine quality is very subjective and my opinion differs from the previous reviewer. At a recent tasting we found the 2009 Pinot Noir to be of very good quality and purchased six bottles to enjoy later and gift to friends.I do agree that the multi course dinner, the service and explanations of the wines and food are excellent. My recent review under the heading of their Inn is attached as reference.********************************************************************************************************"We did not stay at the Inn, which is run by the Thummerer family, who have a well known reputation as quality winemakers in the region, but had one of the best dining experiences in quite some time.On the advice of a relative in Budapest and after checking out their website, we booked a five course dinner for eight with wine pairing. The restaurant and Inn are located in a converted granary with very nice decor run by daughter Eva and her Master Chef husband in the kitchen. Eva is passionate about the family's wine growing history and toured us through the family cellars. Seeing one of their 14,000 litre oak barrels and being dwarfed by it was amazing. Our meal was not pre set and was largely influenced by the freshness of ingredients chosen by the chef at the market. This was not a typical Hungarian dinner of Goulash or Paprikas or Porkolt but a fusion of creative appetizers and main courses created by a truly talented chef who could be at home in any fine restaurant anywhere. What a lucky find for us in such a small, out of the way place. The food was excellent. The service and explanation of the wines by Eva also excellent. The 25 minute ride from Eger is well worth the trip. Eva put us in touch with a mini-bus company that arranged transportation so we could enjoy the wine experience without worrying about driving.I highly recommend this dining experience to anyone who is in the area.(We did tour the rooms after dinner and they were basic, clean and nicely done.)"

Make sure to try the wine-tasting feast of Thummere Winery.Interestingly, it's the hospitality of their staff, the interesting facts being told and the excellent food that's worth the price. To my surprise, the wine itself is rather average - I have tasted much better at Bukolyi (www.bukolyi.hu) and at Andrássy Residence in Tarcal. - but do not expect the best wines there. It is their food that's worth all money!

Borok nagyon finomak voltak, jó sajtokat is kaptunk mellé. Hatalmas a pince, érdekes volt. Kicsit drága a borkóstolás: 6 féle bor + sajtok 4000 Ft
