Worth the hike but we had to park about 1km away from the car park due to ice on the road. Great view once you get up there.

An unplanned visit and hike to the top but well worth it. We had seen the crater from our overnight accommodation and thought we'd take a look. It was a moderately tough walk to the top and definitely not for the unfit. There were a few people at the top but by the time we got half way around the crater rim we were the only people there. It was quite cold with a few snow flurries but we were well prepared so not an issue. I have never really experiencd complete and utter quiet until this day! The only sound was our own breath. No birds, insects, vehicles or even wind. I could have been on the moon. The moment will stay with me for a very long time.

We hiked from Dimmuborgir to this crater and then up it. We took the steep hike up the side of the crater closest to Dimmuborgir and that was tough but fun (it definitely helps to be in shape!). It was very windy up top so we were very cold walking around the crater, but the view from the top is magnificent.

Very large and beautiful crator. My wife and I hiked to the top but we felt it was just as cool seeing it from the bottom. I think there are other areas that are more worth hiking up.

great pics of the lake when you get up. Bugs wont be bad on top either. its worth seeing the sheer size of the crater. makes for a nice 30 min hike

Depending on your shape, the hike up is easy. The view is gorgeous - from here you finally understand the beauty and importance of Myvatn area! Given the parking lot sizes, it may be crowded.... we went there for the sunset and were all alone with a burning sky. Marvelous!

We didn't have lots of time as we lost a day due to gale forced winds so had to cram in 2 days activities into one day. We were told to see this so went for it, took the left side (easier) took about 15 mins to get to the top. We then walked to the highest point of the crater, basically walking half way round ....took lots of photos inside the crater and also of the lake and scenery. If you want to do the whole loop and take photos save approx 1.5 hrs ..if like us you want a good look round, take photos and are happy to march up and back 45 mins will do it. Worth the visit. Hope this is useful. Please let know if so and I'll write again..thanks!

Bring along hiking poles as it's quite a steep climb up to the rim. You'll be rewarded with a good view of the surroundings around Lake Myvatn. It would be good to cater some time (1 hour or so) to go round the rim to see the different scenery (desert, lake, lava fields, etc). The crater is beautiful when lit up by sunlight. Do bring along a windbreaker as gusts are strong around the rim.

Just go there and you will immediately understand. It looks difficult to go up but it is defiantly worth it. On top of the mountain, you will see something that you have never seen before. It is not a long tour all together that deserve the effort.

This unfortunately was a disappointment due to the bugs. This is the first place that we have visited in Iceland where the bugs were bad. The fact is that they were actually beyond bad, they were horrible. The crater is interesting, but if you aren't in good shape, forget about visiting this attraction. The hike to the edge of the crater is strenuous and at a very good grade. If you can make it out of the parking lot without being discouraged by the bugs you will have a great view of the crater and lake.

This was a fairly strenuous hike to the top, but the vista was well worth the effort. Into the crater, it was very interesting to see how well-defined it was. Outside of the crater, a stunning view of the Lake Myvatn area was waiting. We didn't have enough time to walk all the way around the crater (as it was 11pm,) but I will do so next time.

Well, it's not technically a volcano - but it certainly looks like one as you look up from Lake Myvatn or from Route 1 as you drive around it.As we had literally been eaten alive by Myvatn mosquitoes while horse-riding that morning, it was very much on our mind to get away from low lying water and Hverfjall offered the most interesting alternative. Parking up at it's foot, it was a strenuous ten minute climb up a loose sand and gravel path to the top, but the effort was more than rewarded by the majestic sweep of the tephra ring once at the top.The circumference of the crater is apparently 3km, but it looked more than that - we covered about a third of it, so we could look down on Dimmuborgir, the jagged lava field to one side of the cone.Looking out across Myvatn on a hazy Sunday, with mountains rising out of the middle distance, from a height of nearly half a kilometre up - and no mosquitoes - that was brilliant.Definitely worth the effort.

This is a must-see activity in Lake Myvatn. There are two entrances to the crater. One you encounter on your hike from Dimmuborgir. This entrance is VERY VERY steep on loose gravel, but if you are up for the challenge, it is a must do hike!! On our way up we saw some children and elderly taking this route but they struggled. Once you are at the top you are able to see into the center of the crater and see breathtaking views of the lava fields and surrounding area. You are able to walk around the edge at the top of the crater, which is very windy. The second entrance to the crater can be found right near the parking area. This entrance is not as steep. I suggest climbing up the crater on the steep side and coming down on the entrance near the parking area. I would not want to walk down the loose gravel on such a steep slope, but many did. Hverfjall is one of the best places to visit in all of Iceland.

My only regret is that I waited so long before climbing this small cinder crater. We started at Dimmuborgir and walked from there on a beautiful sunny day in July. Two families, 4 children aged 6-11. We took the steep/difficult path up the mountain and back down again. (Thera are warning signs that this is the steep path) It is a goid idea to bring your waterbottles and some snacks for energy. On a colder day some protective clothing might be handy, none were needed on this day. We liker using the rope for support at times, it is very helpful. We did not take time to walk around the crater, just walked to the top for the view and had a little snack before returning. We were 2 hours and 20min with leisurely walking pace picking some berries on the way back. This is a great activity for the whole family, the more difficult path is steep, but safe for children. The cinder is loose and my 7 year old got some in her sneakers and low socks. My 11 year old in his Vibram five fingers had no trouble, but I was happy to be wearing my heavy goretex hiking boots, tall enough to prevent any cinder in my feet.
