I have not seen anything like that before. Wooden sculptures seem to look much more realistic than famous statues of Madame Tussot.

I am astonished by beauty and unusualness of this art. I saw some wood statues before but they were never such close to life. I can't imagine how this master made it but what I saw was great!

Pinsel was extremely talented and a master of his craft. Please enjoy his sculptures, they will change the way you see architecture! Definitely a great place to visit in Lviv! Go see it!

If you have been to Lviv and haven't visited Pinzel Museum it would bereal epic fale. It's like being in Paris and not seing Louvre museum.The wooden sculptures of Master Pinzel are so strange and so beautifelin the same time so everyone who sees them are astonished and amazed.Take into account that museum can be closed earlier than it has to,don't go before very closing.

Pinzel is the most famous master of wooden sculpture in the whole world history so that it wood be a big mistake to miss a chance to come at the biggest exhibition of his masterpieces. Don't hesitate!

Very good, educational and impressive. Attended during the annual discount tours and was very satisfied, find out lots of new things and now can easily recognize Pinzel sculptures anywhere I go. He is for sure well known outside of Ukraine.

It is closed. Government is promissing to give money for the renovation of the building. We've been said that sculptor Pinzel's masterpieces will be exhibited in the building of the Art Gallery and in Olesko castle after they are on loan to LOUVRE .

Pinzel' work is amazing. The museum has very relaxed approach to visitors. Allowing you to see Pinzel's work up close.

I'm not really expert in art and sculpture, but Pinzel's masterpieces impressed me a lot. Those sculptures are very unusual, emotional and dynamic. For such a small fee, you will enjoy it a lot.

Pinzel museum is located in Mytna Square, in the building that used to be a church right near the tram #2 stop. The sculptures are simply magnificent and the place they are located creates some strange impression of deep silence and devotion. The old church was not renovated for long time and is in rather bad condition, but the sculptures together with the church and the background makes you feel the genius of the Jan Georg Pinzel. Some works of the sculptor are stored in other locations of Lviv region. Pinzel museum is a small unnoticeable place, but with many purls inside!

Georg Pinzel was a genue of 17 centure. His sculptures were from the tree and it is the reason of his unfamous.

This small museum won’t take more than half an hour of your time, unless you’ll be carried away by captivating expression of its exhibition. But it’s definitely worth visiting when you’re in Lviv. First reason is the museum’s unique location. It’s situated in the former Church of Poor Clares, so don’t miss the XVIII century fresco painting on its dome when inside. If your eyes are sharp enough, you can see the volumetric foot of a painted saint hanging down from the ceiling. Second reason is the museum’s unique history. It has only become possible due to enthusiasm and passion of its founder, Boris Voznitskiy, director of the Lviv Art Gallery and long-standing researcher of Pinsel’s, who have been tracing Pinsel’s works for about 50 years. Many of the sculptures were destroyed in the Soviet times; some lost in private collections abroad. Several arts were literally saved by Voznitskiy the very last minute before cut to woods by local peasants. Third reason is apparently the museums unique exhibition. Johann Georg Pinzel was a mysterious baroque sculpture of XVIII century, often compared to the great Gian Lorenzo Bernini and even to Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti. Although some meticulous art connoisseurs tend to treat the latter as an exaggeration, there’s nevertheless no doubt that Pinzel had a unique technique and original view on baroque plastic arts, especially visible in his wooden artworks. Unfortunately the information on Pinzel’s life and art is very scarce and extremely limited. And you will not be able to find much of it in the museum. Researchers divide between attributing Pinzel Bavarian, Bohemian, Silesian, Italian or Ukrainian origins. Some even believe he could have escaped from Europe to run away from his past and start a new life in Western Ukraine incognito. And he successfully did. Under the patronage and financial support of Kanev headman Mykola Pototskiy, Pinzel and his long-term partner, architect Bernard Meretyn, have created and decorated lots of sacral houses in Western Ukraine. There are very few of the Pinsel’s masterpieces that were found and identified so far, and many of them are collected in Lviv Sacral Baroque Sculpture Museum. In particular, Pinzel was defined as an author of the stone figures (Yur, Leo, Athanasis) on the top of the St.Yura Cathedral in Lviv, of stone sculptures (St. Jan Nepomucký, Samson, David, Hercules, Neptune and others) in the City Hall in Buchach (Ternopilska oblast), of altar sculptures (St. Yakym and St. Elizabeth) in the Immaculate Conception Church in Horodenka (Ivano-Frankivska oblast), of altar sculptures in the Lady Mary’s Ascension Church in Monastyrska (Ternopilska oblast), of altar sculptures (Sacrifice by Avraam) in the All Saints’ Church in Hodovytsa (Lvivska oblast), of St.Onufriy sculpture in St. Onufriy Church in Rukomysh (Ternopilska oblast). The figures that today can be found on the frontispiece of St.Yura Catherdral are believed to be Pinzel’s first try in stone, the most of his artworks being wooden.Pinzel seemed to have established his own baroque school with over 40 artists known as his students and Lviv museum also exhibits a small selection of works by Pinzel’s followers. Some of the Pinsel’s works are now exhibited in Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (Munich, Germany). Also, a series of bozzettis (models) to Pinsel’s sculptures were recently found in Bavaria. In autumn of Y2011, Musée du Louvre (Paris, France) is preparing to exhibit about twenty of Pinzel’s sculptures in the Chapel were Louis XIV has taken his royal oath. This will be the first ever exhibition of a Ukrainian artist in Louvre.
