grutas del palacio

It is my understanding there are not many geological reserves in the world, and Grutas del Palacio (Palace Caves) is one. This is a 70 million year formation that is partially uncovered (a large area is underground) and very interesting indeed. It is said this could have been an area of native population in Uruguay (the Charrua Indians) although the park ranger on duty told me that there have been no native artifacts found in the place, nor has there been deep archeological investigation either. When I went there it had rained, so the inside of the "palace" was muddy and puddles everywhere, still very interesting to see. Kids love this place, they are lent a flash light to shine the beam into the rock formation holes and such. More can be read about the geological importance of this place online. I can say that it is on route 14, about 40 plus kilometers from Trinidad, the capital city of the Flores department (province) in Uruguay. Check for opening times prior to going. There is a very nice building in the premises, a small fee of a dollar per person is required, a video is shown (in Spanish with English subtitles) on the place, there is a small gift shop, a place to buy some snacks and drinks, good bathrooms and a picnic area. On a sunny or nice day this is a nice location to take sandwiches, drinks, a picnic and stay to have lunch under the eucaliptus trees. There is a walk to the palace caves, nice road, not strenous at all, and accessible to wheel chairs as they will let cars with any disabled person get closer to the caves by road. At the caves, there is a wooden ramp (semi steep) to walk up in order to have a better view for picture taking.

The geological history of Grutas del Palacio is quite interesting, the walk through the rural countryside of Flores to get to the caves is lovely, the small museum has some interesting items, our guide was excellent (She spoke English quite well.), and the video (in Spanish only) explained the site's history. But don't go here expecting to see impressive large caves. They are quite small. We were quite surprised and impressed by the fossil dinosaur egg in the museum. The location is easy to get to if you are driving - on Ruta 3 about 46 Km. north of Trinidad in Flores, and parking is convenient.

Realmente nos gusto mucho ir a las Grutas, no las conocíamos un guía excelente, un video explicatorio, un pequeño museo de la época, realmente recomendable. Ademas no debemos olvidar que también nuestro Uruguay tiene cosas interesantes.

desde que llegas la atencion es excelente,el museo,la torre y ese camino po r la naturaleza hasta las gutas es muy disfrutable,y las grutas algo hermoso ,increible,grandes y chicos estabamos facinados,solo una recomendacion llevar calzado muy comodo y no nuevo.

El parque presenta un entorno muy bueno, agradable para pasar un tiempo al aire libre. Le falta un poco más de opciones para alargar la visita y poder hacer del viaje un paseo de todo el día. Esta ubicado a 35 km de Trinidad y a sólo 6km de la ruta 3 con buen acceso. Son 230 km desde Montevideo y es posible armar un paseo de día completo visitando las grutas y la reserva de flora y fauna de la ciudad. Buena opción para ir con niños.Un párrafo aparte para la guía de las grutas. Muy instruida y apasionada de su trabajo. Recomendable para las vacaciones de turismo o primavera o para algún fin de semana largó con clima agradable.

Sin dudas merece la pena ir a conocer las Grutas, así como todo su entorno.Las guías unas genias, un plus para el recorrido, muy interesante y muy dispuestas. Sin dudas tenemos lugares lindos en nuestro país que salen de lo que es el sol y la playa.Muy pero muy recomendable!!!

Vale la pena visitar este lugar arqueológico donde se mezclan varias ciencias (arqueología, paleontología, espeleología y biología, entre otras) y que tantos años han pasado por esas ruinas construidas únicamente por la mano de la naturaleza. Aparte la Intendencia (por ahora únicamente ellos) lo mantiene muy bien, no solo las grutas específicas sino todo el parque circundante y la casona que oficia de recepción. Tienen guías que te acompañan, te cuentan la historia y te proveen de linternas para aprovechar mejor la visita.
