I first saw Ellendale Pool in the late Seventies. Then it was regarded as a quiet picnic spot for the locals, where swimming and rambles along the river bank made a quiet, leisurely day.As the road east from Walkaway was bitumen4ed, the popularity of the place increased until the Shire had to add amenities; at first only rubbish bins, then pan toilets and later crude barbecues with a levelled parking area.Today there are chemical toilets, gas barbecues and an enlarged parking area suitable for caravans. The fresh water pool with its backdrop of multi layered and coloured stone cliff has not changed, and several visitors have favourably compared it with Carajini Gorge in the Pilbara and other riverside scenic attractions. If you have seen Greenough Pioneer settlement, and have an hour or two to spare, drive east on the bitumen road just south of the café, through Walkaway town and continue east, stopping to admire the wind generators then follow the signs to Ellendale pool.on the way home, stop for refreshments at the Walkaway Tavern (formerly Palace Hotel) then either drive north to Geraldton on Edward Road or back to the Brand Highway.
Beautiful secluded oasis of calm in the middle of nowhere. Great little history lesson included and excellent facilities for a visit. Toilets and bbq included and plenty of parking and shade. Worth a turn off the road to visit when in the area or making a days visit.
