Bakery Hill boasts a world first achievement! It was a citizens rebellion that followed in thhe tradition of Ballarat's Eureka rebellion, when MacDonald's proposed to bulldoze the historic line up of 1850s and 60s shop fronts and replace them with one of its standard drive thrus and restaurants. The citizens protests won out and forced the City Council to deny the permit for MacDonalds to tamper with the existing buildings to any great extent.Instead of taking their brand and premises elsewhere, they compromised and agreed to build a restaurant within the historic precinct. There followed a world wide precedent and MacDonald's has grown massively as an organisation and brand as a result, now following with stores within historic locals world-wide.Their are way more food options that just Maccas here though; little boutique cafes and restaurants, along with local shopping, in this very old quarter of town!Worth checking out if you have time!
Ballarat East has a long and colourful history and Bakery Hill, site of Ballarat's first bakery, was important in this. If you find yourself browsing in Ballarat's Bridge Mall, it is worth taking a few minutes to walk on upslope to the east. Here the roads are no longer in a grid pattern, and a number converge at Bakery Hill. If, when in other parts of the city, you noticed a flag on the horizon, you'll discover that the flagstaff is on Bakery Hill and the flag is the blue and white Southern Cross. In 1854 insurgent miners held a Monster Meeting on Bakery Hill and swore an oath of allegiance to the flag and what it represented to them; the violent Eureka Stockade battle followed (about 1.5km further to the east). In 1858 the Welcome Nugget was found on Bakery Hill. You'll see St Paul's Anglican Church on Humffray Street North: Anglican worship began on that site in 1854, and the existing building dates from 1865. Nearby are a few other vintage buildings that so far have escaped demolition even though they lack good heritage protection. On Bakery Hill you'll also see the Battlers Tavern, a bandstand, a tourist info map, rose beds, etc. The Bakery Hill Shopping Centre is in Victoria Street and the Best Western Bakery Hill Motel in Humffray Street.
