I was amazed at how much there was to see, read about & learn about this area in an excellently set up & (volunteer) run museum.
Firstly you will notice how moderate the fees are to enter the museum and how friendly and approachable the staff are. As you enter you can only be impressed with the extensive collection of military paraphernalia. We were surprised by this small country town museum... but pleasantly so. After spending considerable time looking through all of the displays, we were ale to purchase books from a very good range about the local region. They have very clean amenities. If you have an interest in history...you need to make time for this.
If you're heading down to Port Albert, this small maritime museum is definitely worth a visit. Like many other museums, it is run by knowledgeable volunteers and the museum contains a mine of information; from the days it was first laid out as port, to the shipwrecks along the coast, right up to modern times and drilling for oil and gas. There were all sorts of exhibits; items from wrecks alongside instruments actually used in signalling stations and on board ships. The museum is easy to find and is in a great location and only a small fee to enter ($6). We enjoyed the visit and would recommend it.
Glad I visited here. It was very interesting, and the lady who welcomed us gave our kids a game to play, which resulted in a reward at the end. Talk about a win-win. They had a great time playing (learning) and we were able to view the exhibits. A lot of work has been done putting this together. Well worth a visit.
The museum in Port Albert was well worth the visit as it is so well run & presented by a volunteer team. The man on duty when I went was very friendly & helpful. Some of the exhibits were inter active as well & all the exhibits were well documented. As a keen follower of all things marine I think this is a great if small museum to spend an hour or two visiting.
This is a little gem. It is run by volunteers, but you wouldn't think so - it is a professional effort. There is a wide range of exhibits which are well presented and the person on duty was helpful and knowledgeable. They also have a lot of family history materials if you have had family in the area. A small $6 fee.
When in the area make sure you give this little museum a visit tells the maritime history of Port Albert in a well constructed manner.Staff know their stuff and you wont be disappointed.Follow up with fish and chips from the shop on the pier
Port Albert Maritime Museum is the best regional museum I have ever visited. It has an incredibly well curated collection and the volunteer staff are really good.
Nicely done. A lovely way to learn about the region. I am always skeptical about these little Museums, but in this case I was pleasantly surprised. Recommended.
Visiting Port Albert with friends from Melbourne we only had a short time to browse this wonderful museum, so I vowed to go back again one day with lots of time to spare. A fantastic collection of maritime history requires at least several hours to appreciate properly. And don't forget to pop into the cafe at the old General Store opposite for some great food!!!
very good and informative museum considering the size of the town which is only 300 people, excellent active displays and well structured
Thought wed never go through this after many trips but surprised ourselves enjoyable free lots o see
Really appreciated being shown around by Bill, who has an amazing knowledge of both the collection and maritime history. The visit to the archives warmed my librarian's heart. Well worth seeing!
