What a mind-blowing experience for lovers of Gauguin! I was 'introduced' to the paintings of Gauguin years ago in the Musee d'orsay and the Jeu de paume in Paris and have been intoxicated with the beauty of his use of vivid greens, yellows and blues, amongst other, since then. Hiva Oa is lush green like a large garden and is by far the most natural of the six Polynesian islands that I have been to! The people are justifiably and fiercely independent and proud of their ancient culture which is being revived after some Europeans, in various ways, tried to destroy it! The museum is a sanctuary to his work and is worth the long flight from Papeete in Tahiti!

If you are visiting Hiva Oa you have to go to the museum. None of the art work is original and much of the information is only in french but it does give a good overview of both Gauguin's work and life. the museum is well laid out and easy to find. The art in the museum is all painted by one of 3 artists and one of the most inteesting things is a display where they all reproduce the same painting. Quelle difference!

Nice small museum that concentrates on Gauguin and especially his time in French Polynesia. None of the art items are originals, but they do represent a good cross-section of his work in one place which helps to trace the development of his craft. Was lucky to have listened to an art lecturer on our ship before we arrived, so I had a better understanding of his background and the individual pieces. The museum was almost empty of visitors when we were there which certainly beats seeing the originals with thousands of others in Paris. Visit while in Hiva Oa.

I unfortunately rushed the museum and would have liked to stay longer and read more. If you are interested in art and Gauguin, it's clearly gives you the story of his journey through life (maybe not much on the more controversial aspects of his life), but it is well displayed and interesting and if you are in Hiva Oa you must come here.

Really well set out museum. No original art but a whole lot of copies that that gave the effect of his opus without pretending to be his. All the copies had been authorized. Interesting chronology of his life. Artifacts from his house nearby. Spend 2 hours and went back the next day to double check some of the local carvings also to be found there, good value for money. Do not miss it.

Some art museums may be a little stuffy. Others have long hallways and too many steps to climb. Occasionally the special exhibits are too costly. No such problems here! This art museum lacks only one thing...paintings by Gauguin! The museum is located on a beautiful beach surrounded by a tropical garden. Soft breezes keep the air flowing and it is an easy stroll through the facility.Entry fees are minimal. The only paintings are faded reprints and a few copies of some of his wood carvings. If you look carefully you will find a chart identifying the locations of the originals. Several paintings are owned by a local car dealer. They are put on display at the dealership when a new model is rolled out. If your time is limited, I suggest you by- pass this attraction.

This museum had a lot of Gaugauin reproductions, as well as a lot of info about the painter. It also has some very nice Marquesas artifacs. Very interesting and not espensive..6XPF
