Baker street has a vibe unique in small town Canada. While filled with many unique independent restaurants, cafes, and craft stores, what makes this stretch of downtown Nelson most remarkable are the people who walk along it. Some of them are indeed refugees from the 60's and the Hippie culture. But along Baker Street you will find people from all walks of life and all political persuasions: particle physicists (I kid you not), poets, extreme skiers, Waldorf schoolteachers, Quakers, actors, potters, moms with kids in tow--the diversity is quite amazing.I've lived here for more than thirty years, and still look forward to checking out Baker St. every week.

I have been to Nelson many times and it is always a joy to be here, summer or winter. In the winter the skiing and snowboarding is superb (so I am told, can't take part in that sadly due to a dodgy knee) and in the summer hiking is excellent and some is also possible in winter).Baker Street an the surrounding streets are full of cafés, pubs, bookshops, outdoor equipment shops etc and it is easy to spend a quiet day in town. The scenery with mountains and the lake is beautiful.People are amazing, friendly and smiling with plenty of interesting characters!I love it!

If you don't walk both sides of Baker Street, end to end, then you haven't seen Nelson. Poke you head in any number of shops and for sure you'll spend a few dollars but I/we always have an awesome time and we're not what you call big spenders. Just good value for what we spend on food or clothing. Love it.

I am all over the old buildings , the independent shops and the cool and friendly locals. We stopped by the rock and gem shop and there was this hippy guy who was trying to buy a crystal to help him move his furniture. lol I love hanging out in Nelson.

Very expensive to shop in Nelson lots of women's clothing stores but very very pricey not sure how the average wage earner is able to support the stores here because of the high prices

food was good and had something for everyone. Had the salmon, was great, had the 1/2 chicken, was great and the borscht was good too!

We took the haunted train ride around town and learned of all the interesting ghost stories of many of the building around town. Was very interesting. Also went in October and were able to enjoy all the trees in full color...it was quite beautiful !!!

There are lots of unique shops, also lots of restaurants and coffee shops. There are other services such as banks available. The sidewalks were busy, mostly local people as November is considered a bit of a slowtime there--after summer recreation and before skiing. The only downside were several groups of mostly younger people panhandling, though that was mostly after most shops closed and we were walking toa restaurant for dinner.

Except for the Pharmasave, there are only locally owned and operated shops, NO chain stores! This is why I travel, to get the LOCAL flavour!

Oh my gosh. If you take a walk down Baker Street or any of the roads around Nelson, prepare to be overwhelmed with the friendliness that the local exude. Even when you are driving, locals wave and smile - totally extraordinary. We so enjoyed Nelson, it is hard to point to one specific thing that we enjoyed. I am writing a couple of reviews on restaurants that we enjoyed in the area but seriously, Nelson pulsates like no other city I have ever experienced (except Nelson New Zealand which is almost like a mirror image of this amazing city). I believe that because of its isolation as it has no air service and to actually leave it in the middle of Winter, it becomes a very unique community. Absolutely love the place!!

Stroll down the length of Baker Street. It is like stepping back to the fifties. Locally owned business' clothing, sporting goods, bike shops, bakeries and coffee shops, real book stores and a small jewellery shop that actually fixed my watch while I had a coffee and called me when it was ready. Even the old people look healthy and outdoorsy.

loved the shops, the people all over, no dogs on street, not sure what I think about this one, signs are not well marked. Great places to eat.

There is a good variety to suit every pallet. The staff are efficient & helpful. Service is quick. Helpings heaping. Great City street view.

Lots of interesting stores and a good selection of restaurants. We enjoyed the variety. The coffee was delicious and both meals first rate.
